Hey folks, this year’s Twestival in Lagos, Nigeria will be happening on 25th March 2010. If you are on Twitter and would be in Lagos on the 25th, kindly save that date.

Why? Let me explain…

Twestival brings people in hundreds of cities around the world together offline to rally around an important cause by hosting local events to have fun and create awareness.

The first Twestival Global was held in 202 international cities on 12 February 2009, to support @charitywater, who we saw doing incredible work to help the almost 1 billion or 1 in 6 people in the world that don’t have access to clean and safe drinking water.

Over 1,000 volunteers and 10,000 donors fundraised $250k+, which resulted in more than 55 wells in Uganda, Ethiopia and India having a direct impact for over 17,000 people. Watch the videos of the first Twestival well drilled in the village of Mai Nabri, Ethiopia.

In 2010, Twestival will focus on education and 72 million children in the world who don’t have the opportunity to go to school. @Concern Worldwide has been selected by the Twestival global team and local organizers to be the recipient because of their comprehensive and well respected approach to education.

Twestival™ (or Twitter Festival) uses social media for social good.

Lagos Twestival 2010

We hope to join the world in creating awareness about Twestival and rallying around the important cause of “Education” on March 25, 2010.

The venue for the Lagos Twestival 2010 is yet to be decided, although we welcome suggestions. Possible venues could be a local bar or restaurant within the Lagos metropolis. Preferably, the venue should be on Twitter or should be using social media.

Team Lagos Twestival

We currently have a small team of organizers including Francis @qubestreet and Loy @startupsnigeria, as well as volunteers such as @gbengasesan amongst others.

Become a Volunteer!

We need you to make the Lagos Twestival 2010 a success. Please find some volunteer positions:

• Sponsorship Manager - This is a key role that requires identifying key companies and organizations that would be willing to fund the event. Sponsors will be featured as sponsors of the Twestival.
• Marketing Manager - This role will handle the sales/marketing needs of the event.
• Designs/Promotions Manager - We’ll be needing someone to handle the design, production and distribution of badges, t-shirts, etc.
• Content Managers - We’d love to do live-blogging and twittering at Lagos Twestival 2010.
• Graphic Designers -  Digital & print media experts, merchandising and website assistance will be needed.
• Artists/Poets/Musicians – If you are an upcoming artist or famed celebrity and would like to perform for FREE on that day, please bring it on.

Join us for an historic global event!On Thursday, February 12th, Lagos is joining forces with over 175 +  cities around the world, harnessing the power of twitter, social media and technology for an evening of fun and networking to raise money and awareness for Charity: Water.

Why is it historic?
For the first time ever twitter (www.twitter.com) users from around the world will be participating in a single event to be broadcast live from major cities to benefit a single vitally important cause.

Why Water?
Right now 1.1 billion people on the planet don’t have access to safe, cleandrinking water. That’s one in six of us. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kill more people everyear than all forms of violence, including war. Many communities in developing nations often have a plentiful supply of clean drinking water just below the ground, but no way to get to it.

What is Charity: Water?

Charity: Water is a non profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations by funding sustainable clean watersolutions in areas of greatest need. www.charitywater.org
